Chief Technology Officer
Willie K. Chan joined AspenTech in 1982 and serves as Chief Technology Officer, bringing to this role more than 35 years of experience in developing computer software solutions for optimizing the performance of chemical and refining processes. In this role, Chan leads the technology strategy, R&D and quality assurance functions for AspenTech products on a global basis.
Chan was a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ASPEN research program that later became AspenTech, and has held a variety of senior technical and management positions in the company. Most recently, Chan was Senior Vice President, Technology, where he led the establishment of AspenTech’s R&D Centers of Excellence in Bedford MA, Houston TX and Shanghai China. He also drove the integration of aspenONE software products, incorporating molecular modeling, solids process simulation, sulfur recovery modeling, process safety, dock/pipeline scheduling, machine learning and other technologies into the aspenONE suite. He also oversaw the development of the next-generation user interfaces, activation workflows and other technology advancements.
Previously, Chan held a number of R&D leadership positions for Engineering Products at AspenTech, including the integration of the HYSYS family of products and the creation of the Aspen Engineering Suite. He began his career at AspenTech by leading the development of separations and petroleum technologies.
Chan holds Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Executive Vice President, Operations
John Hague is Executive Vice President, Operations at AspenTech. In this role, John is responsible for the Global Sales, Customer Success, Product Marketing and Partners organizations, as well as the Asset Performance Management (APM) business unit.
John is a seasoned member of AspenTech’s executive team, where his most recent role was leading the APM business unit, turning it into one of the key drivers of AspenTech’s transformation.
Over the past 20 years, John has served in a variety of key executive roles at AspenTech, overseeing the sales organization for North and Latin America, building out the Middle East and North Africa business region as well as driving AspenTech’s global partner strategy and several key acquisitions. John also led product operations in the early 2000s as a member of the Products organization. John previously worked with Conoco where he held management positions in several business areas including roles supporting the DuPont organization. He has also held management positions at Scientific Software and Advanced Pipeline Technologies. He holds a B.S. and an MBA from Oklahoma State University.
Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Frederic G. Hammond joined AspenTech in 2005 as Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary with global responsibility for corporate governance and legal matters. Hammond has over two decades of experience in public company general counsel and global operational and transactional experience.
Prior to AspenTech, he handled SEC disclosure and other public company and technology issues as a partner at a Boston law firm. Before that, Hammond was Vice President of Business Affairs and General Counsel at Gomez Advisors, Inc., an Internet performance measurement and benchmarking technology service firm, with responsibilities for corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate and creditor restructurings and commercial contracts management.
He held earlier positions as General Counsel of Avid Technology, the publicly-held international leader in digital video and audio editing, special effects and production solutions; and as a member of the corporate department of the law firm of Ropes & Gray. Hammond is a graduate of Boston College Law School, cum laude, and Yale College.
Chief Financial Officer
Karl Johnsen joined AspenTech in 2013 and serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Prior to becoming CFO, Johnsen served as Vice President, Corporate Controller bringing over twenty years of financial management and leadership experience to the company.
Prior to AspenTech, Johnsen served as Vice President, Chief Accounting Officer for Avid Technology, a leading provider of digital media content-creation products and solutions for audio, film, video, and broadcast professionals. He has also held Finance leadership roles at a variety of public and private technology and software companies including Fusion Storm, a global value added reseller of technology products and provider of professional and cloud services; GlassHouse Technologies, Inc., a global provider of data center consulting, integration and managed services; Art Technology Group, a software provider of integrated Internet-based commerce applications; and ClickTactics, Inc., a software developer of a web-based direct marketing automation solutions. Johnsen is also a CPA and started his career at Arthur Andersen, LLP.
Johnsen holds a B.S. in Accountancy from Bentley University and an MBA from Babson College.
Senior Vice President, Corporate Development
Glover Lawrence is AspenTech’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and is responsible for the company’s corporate development and business planning processes. Previously, he held a variety of corporate development roles in investment banking and high technology environments, most recently at Avid Technology. At Avid he led acquisition strategy and managed the company’s strategic planning processes, working closely with Executive Management and the Board of Directors.
Lawrence began his career with Morgan Stanley as a financial analyst where he performed mergers and acquisition analyses for a number of clients including companies in the Chemical and Manufacturing industries. At Hambrecht & Quist (now part of JPMorgan), he advised clients on strategic transactions including acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures, and he has served as a Managing Director in the Venture Fund at Oracle. He also co-founded and served for five years as a Managing Director with McNamee Lawrence & Co., an international investment banking advisory firm, before joining Avid.
Lawrence holds a Bachelor’s degree from Yale and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Senior Vice President and General Manager
David Leitham is Senior Vice President and General Manager at Aspen Technology, Inc. David is leading AspenTech’s approach to the pharmaceuticals market, defining the solutions that will best serve the manufacturing needs of the sector and working with sales leadership to accelerate the company’s go-to-market strategy.
Prior to AspenTech, David spent nearly 20 years with Thermo Fisher Scientific. He held multiple leadership positions, most recently as Vice President and General Manager responsible for a team of more than 500 people that consistently delivered double digit growth in software revenue while also driving upwards of $1 billion in connected annual sales. David also drove digital transformation efforts for multiple businesses within the company, while also integrating and harmonizing product divisions for improved organization and performance.
His previous roles include Glaxo SmithKline where he served as Vice President, Information Engineering, Technology and Architecture; The Network Connection where he served as Vice President, Software Engineering and Vice President, Application Development; and FAAC Incorporated, where he held several engineering positions.
David attended Penn State University where he holds a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering.
Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer
Lawrence Schwartz joined AspenTech in 2018 as SVP and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). He is responsible for Corporate Marketing and brings to AspenTech more than 20 years of experience building world-class marketing organizations for growing companies.
Most recently, Schwartz served as CMO at SoftwareONE, a $7B software and cloud portfolio management company with business in over 80 countries. While at SoftwareONE, he grew press and industry awareness, built a diverse digital demand generation portfolio, rolled out new branding and messaging, led multiple international events, developed thought leadership in a variety of forums, and launched several new offerings to the marketplace. Prior to SoftwareONE, he served as CMO for Attunity, a leading provider of information availability software solutions for the enterprise. Previously, he held senior marketing and product management positions at EMC, E Ink Corporation and Tokutek.
Schwartz is a sought-after speaker at industry conferences and has been quoted in numerous publications. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BS in Aeronautics and Astronautics, also from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Senior Vice President and General Manager, AIoT Solutions
Bill Scudder joined AspenTech in 2015 and serves as Senior Vice President and General Manager, AIoT Solutions. AspenTech’s AIoT Hub provides the foundation for industrial AI, including flexible data mobility and integration from on prem to the cloud, and empowers our customers to get actionable insights faster than ever with our next-generation Industrial AI solutions. He previously served as the company’s Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, and remains responsible for the company’s IT organization.
He has more than 25 years of IT leadership experience, developing and implementing mission-critical, global technologies and building the operations and IT organizations to support them.
Prior to AspenTech he was Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Sonus Networks, where in 2011 he was named CIO of the Year by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council. Before Sonus, he was Senior Director of Information Technology at EMC, leading IT for its RSA Security Division and holding senior IT positions at RSA prior to the acquisition. Previously, he held executive positions at Smith & Nephew, a $2B global manufacturer of medical devices and consumer healthcare products.
Scudder holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an MBA from Boston University.
