Successful Design of Bioprocesses: Integrated Approach

In recent years, industrial biotechnology (IB) has begun to show great potential for augmenting the worldwide carbon-based economy, by converting waste and carbon emissions into valuable products previously only obtainable through converting hydrocarbons. While bio-chemical conversion processes prove to be very effective on a small scale and in the production of high value specialty products, IB still has to confront a few obstacles when it comes to production of bulk chemicals and (bio)fuels. Relatively low production yields and low product concentrations, which are typical for bioprocesses, will often result in high water footprint, complex downstream processing and energy, and capital intensive process designs. Technology innovators are working to overcome these challenges in order to reach commercial scale production of chemical intermediates, building blocks, bulk chemicals and fuels from biological feedstock.

As a result, the risk of ineffective and expensive process development is minimized. At the same time, this integrated approach reveals design opportunities that help R&D and engineering improve the economic viability of the project and move closer to commercialization.
