Focus onProcess Engineering: A Journey of Rapid Evolution |
Welcome to our fifth edition of Aspen HYSYS Insights. This issue focuses
on AspenTech’s continued commitment to process engineering. Over
the past 20 years, process engineering tools have evolved dramatically.
AspenTech has and continues to be at the forefront, providing our
customers with best-in-class products and unique product integration,
as demonstrated by aspenONE for Process Engineering and the latest
V2006 release. Read on to learn about the new enhancements.
AspenTech also remains committed to the academic community. Read about the restructured university program, which enables universities to take full advantage of our latest technologies.
AspenTech recently teamed up with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Read about how this collaboration will significantly expand the reach of process modeling in emerging areas such as bio-diesel, coal gasification and pharmaceutical process development.
We are also excited to provide you with a preview of the 2007 User GroupMeetings, to be held next month in Houston and Frankfurt. Preview the schedule and reserve your seat today!
I hope you find this edition of Aspen HYSYS Insights helpful. This newsletter, combined with our interactive webinar series and the User GroupMeetings, represent our continued commitment to your success.

Innovation WatchProcess Modeling Innovation Forum |
AspenTech hosted its first ProcessModeling Innovation Forum on January 31. The highlight of the event was the formal announcement of AspenTech’s successful collaboration with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This important achievement with NIST is an industry first and delivers an unprecedented scope of modeling expertise to our customers.
Most notably, the collaboration will greatly increase the number of components in AspenTech’s physical properties package, significantly expanding the reach of process modeling to processes that previously were difficult to model. Several major customers were on hand at the event and presented their success stories, using process modeling to create value across the entire process lifecycle. Read the full press release.

University NewsAspenTech Reaffirms its Commitment to Academia |
The AspenTech University Program has been restructured to offer a more comprehensive suite of products that encompass the entire lifecycle of the plant from engineering to plant operations and supply chain management. The program enables universities to employ the same technologies relied upon by leading industrial companies worldwide. By ensuring that professors have the proper tools to solve real-world problems, students are better equipped with the skills necessary for success as they advance to the workforce.
Three comprehensive packages (Engineering,Manufacturing, and Supply Chain) are available at discounted pricing to qualified universities. Enrollment requests should be sent by academic professors to university.program@aspentech.com.

In the NewsFocus on Integrated FEEDby Earl Tipton, Technip & Sanjeev Mullick / Andrew McBrien, AspenTech |
The future calls for a different type of process engineer. The challenge is to automate routine tasks and equip the engineer to become a true knowledge worker, able to think creatively about new possibilities. Integrated Front End Engineering & Design (FEED) applications reveal a new way to look at process designs. This includes process modeling integrated with detailed equipment design, economic evaluation, safety and control analysis, and process data management. These enable a deeper understanding of the process for better and more cost-effective designs.
This article explains how E&C firms can utilize the latest plant design tools and integrated workflows to deliver high value customer projects. It highlights Technip's adoption of aspenONE Process Engineering and describes their use of different integrated tools, including Aspen HYSYS and Aspen HYSYS Dynamics, Aspen Plus and Aspen Dynamics, Aspen Process Evaluator and Aspen Zyqad, integrated with Intergraph’s SmartPlant Suite. The article also outlines engineering best practices and benefits using examples from recent projects.

Where did my property package options go? |
|
In previous versions of Aspen HYSYS, the calculation options available for the Property Package were scattered in the SetUp tab. It was difficult for users to find and select the different methods they wanted to apply. In Aspen HYSYS V2006, go to the Parameters tab and select your options via drop down lists. |
Ever wanted to "undo" a change in your HYSYS case? |
|
The much anticipated Undo feature is now available in Aspen HYSYS V2006. Access it through the Edit | Undo menu function or through the Ctrl-Z keystroke. |
What is the Flowsheet Summary feature and how do I use it? |
|
In Aspen HYSYS V2006, the Simulation Navigator has been renamed Flowsheet Summary and has been enhanced with some additional features. |
Looking for an easier way to specify expander performance curves? |
|
With Aspen HYSYS V2006 you can enter expanderMass Flow vs. Shaft Power data typically provided by vendors. This is an improvement over previous versions where performance curves could only be specified in terms of Volume Flow vs. Head. |
What's new in Aspen HYSYS V2006 for compressor simulation? |
|
In the previous versions, the Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) control was implemented only in the dynamic mode for compressors with user-specified IGV curves. With Aspen HYSYS V2006, this has been extended to steady state also. Changing the current IGV position now changes the operating point accordingly. Another enhancement is in dynamics and controllers. In V2006, you can use the current IGV position as an output target, enabling controllers to use the IGV position for compressor control. |
