A Message from Bill Canney

Blair Wheeler Welcome to this first edition of Aspen APC Insights. With all of the exciting developments surrounding APC, this newsletter provides a great forum where we can share ideas and provide you helpful, practical information as it relates to your own APC and RTO applications.

In this premiere issue, we highlight the latest enhancements to our Aspen DMCplus, Aspen Apollo, and Aspen Watch products-all designed to improve workflow and bring measurable benefits to your operation. In the case of Aspen Watch, the new features are the direct result of customer feedback. If you have any input on a particular application or have a new challenge you’re facing, we want to hear from you. Simply email us at AspenAPCInsights@aspentech.com.

Two customers that have reported significant gains in production, operational savings, and revenue as a result of their aspenONE APC implementation are PetroChina and Sinopec SPC. We invite you to read their stories and see how they are driving innovation in the polymer industry.

Another way that we serve our “community” of APC customers is through seminars, webinars, and training. Our “Sustained Value for APC” User Group seminars promise to be especially valuable, featuring renowned industry experts such as Ed MacNeel, Blaine McIntyre, and others who will share best practices and real-world case studies to help you be more successful. Scheduled for Houston, Princeton, and San Francisco (with future dates for Europe and Asia), these one-day seminars will also let you see firsthand new developments with the aspenONE APC product line—as well as provide feedback on our product roadmap. Learn more in this issue and register for the seminar near you.

We hope that you enjoy the Aspen APC Insights newsletter and, as always, we welcome your comments and suggestions for future issues.

Sincerely yours,

Bill Canney, APC Product Director, Aspen Technology

Driving Sustained Value with Aspen Watch™

by John Campbell, Senior Principal Engineer; Quinn Zheng, Senior Advisor and Development Manager; and Sriram Ramaganesan, Principal Business Consultant, AspenTech

AspenTech’s APC solutions enable customers to capture maximum value from their APC applications and sustain this value throughout the lifecycle of the application. One of these solutions is Aspen Watch for advanced monitoring, diagnosis and performance improvement.

In the recent aspenONE V2006, AspenTech made significant enhancements to Aspen Watch based on valuable customer feedback combined with state-of-the art new technology. Through an intuitive web interface, the new version provides advanced monitoring, drill-down troubleshooting and an infrastructure that enables customers to build best practices for APC maintenance. Specific updates enable users to:

AspenTech also released a new Aspen Watch component with V2006, Aspen SmartAudit. Aspen SmartAudit reads and evaluates model files for structural problems. If near-collinear structural problems are discovered, then the gains can be corrected in an optimal way to improve online controller performance.

These new and updated tools combined with AspenTech's professional services and recommended best practices for APC maintenance will enable the sustained value of APC applications, providing a solid infrastructure for maintaining best practices and proactive maintenance guidelines.

Voice of the Customer: Improve Production Is #1 Goal

Every three months, AspenTech invites customers to participate in a Voice of the Customer Survey to provide feedback on products, customer support & training, professional services, and other areas of the company. In the most recent survey, customers were also polled about their most important business goals in various areas.

AspenTech’s APC customers worldwide responded to this survey and results show that their top goals for APC in the next six months are:

Graph of Survey

The responses varied between APC energy and APC chemicals customers. The top goal for energy users was overwhelmingly improving production yields, while chemicals users identified improving production throughput as the top goal.

What’s the most important APC business goal at your organization in the next six months? Give your input in this single question online survey. We’ll discuss the responses in the next issue of the newsletter.

PetroChina Saves $640K US in Polyolefin Production

by Wang Kuiyuan, Chief Engineer, PetroChina; Paul Turner, Global Polymers Solution Director, AspenTech; and Xianwen Wu, Senior APC Engineer, AspenTech
Originally appeared in: The Chemical Engineer, April 2007

Polymer manufacturers typically run their processes through a fixed production cycle during transitions between grades. This is in an attempt to balance their inventories while minimizing the production of off-spec product.

PetroChina is one of the largest companies in China and is a major producer of polyolefins in that region. By implementing aspenONE Advanced Process Control for Polymers solution, PetroChina dramatically improved their grade transition agility and efficiency. The transitions performed on this process sometimes involve reactor configuration changes (parallel to series operation), which is one of the most challenging procedures to automate and optimize in the industry.

The benefits were US$640,000/year on this 80,000 t/year process, delivering a positive return on investment in less than 12 months. Read the complete article.

Is it possible to integrate my gas plant with my FCC DMCplus controller?

The need for additional FCC capacity often pushes gas plants to capacity constraints. Now you can achieve sustainable value when you bring your reactor/regen (RR), main fractionator (MF), and gas plant under one DMCplus controller. New software tools, project methodologies, and computer capabilities eliminate the need for separate FCC and gas plant controllers, making it easier to manage gas plants - potentially saving companies millions.

Can I add date/time stamp to an Aspen DMCplus print file name?

Absolutely! You can add a date and/or a date/time stamp to Aspen DMCplus PRT files. Multiple formatting options are available, including month, day of month, day of week, hour or more detail.

Should I run SP2 for Windows 2003 with Aspen Advanced Process Control applications?

It is not recommended to run ACO Base, Aspen Apollo, Aspen DMCplus, Aspen IQ, or Aspen SmartStep versions 1.2, 6.0.1, 2004, 2004.1, 2004.2 or 2006 with Windows 2003 SP2.

How does Piece Wise Linear Transform transform effective limit in Aspen SmartStep Simulate?

Application of patch files for Aspen SmartStep Desktop and Aspen SmartStep Online will resolve this issue identified in Aspen SmartStep V2006.

Why do I get the error message "no data available" in Aspen Watch?

When launching AspenWatch Inspector, after connecting to the database, you may get a message "no data available - failed to open %SETCIMLINKS%.” There may be a number of causes for this message, one of those being when there is a mismatch between the snapshot version and the version of the Aspen Watch application. For example, a snapshot from an AMS 6x version of Aspen Watch loaded into an aspenONE version of the product will cause such a message.
