Session Description:Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS, the two market leading simulators have rapidly expanded their conceptual engineering and optimization capabilities over the last few years. This session will cover latest highlights and customer experiences in simulation, conceptual engineering, optimization and knowledge management. The session will also highlight best practices in this area through customer experiences.
Engineering Main Session II: Equipment Analysis & Optimization
Session Description:Equipment design and optimization is a collaborative activity across owner operators, engineering companies and equipment vendors. Equipment optimization can provide a significant impact on project ROI if it is carried out in the context of the overall process instead of on a stand-alone basis. Solids Process Modelling in Aspen Plus: This session will highlight solids process modeling capabilities in aspenONE Engineering and how these capabilities can be utilized to model processes involving fluids and solids in an integrated manner.
Modeling Flare and Blow-Down Systems: Dynamic simulation can give much better estimates of relief loads and pressures in a flare or blow-down system. In this session, we will introduce capabilities to obtain more accurate estimates of the relief and blow-down flowrates, which can lead to substantial capital savings.
Best Practices for Pipeline Hydraulic Modeling in Aspen HYSYS: New capabilities in pipeline hydraulics modeling, including flow assurance, are now available in Aspen HYSYS. The session will be useful to new or prospective users of Aspen Basic Engineering, and to anyone who is responsible for training end-users.
Creating New Templates for Datasheets and Lists: Aspen Basic Engineering delivers over 190 templates for datasheets and lists, and users may extend the library to capture corporate standards or client needs. In this session, you will learn the procedure to create new templates, details of how to use the configuration tools, and best practices and tricks and tips.
Integrated Planning and Process Simulation: Production planning with Aspen PIMS enables petroleum refiners to maximize margins through optimum selection of feedstock’s and identification of optimum operation including product mix. Process simulation with Aspen HYSYS improves planning model accuracy due to accuracy of simulation and reactor models. This session will provide in-depth review of best practices and methodologies in this area.
Integrated Simulation & Heat Exchanger Design in Aspen Plus and HYSYS: Heat exchangers need to be designed and optimized in the context of the overall process. This session will provide an in-depth understanding of how heat exchangers can be designed and optimized inside Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus environments using rigorous heat exchanger models.
Fired Heater Modeling and Integration with Aspen HYSYS: Fired Heaters are typically considered as a “black box” during conceptual design due to difficulties in simultaneously modeling and analyzing opportunities in these units as integral part of process simulation model. Rigorous fired heater models now can be incorporated inside Aspen HYSYS enabling process engineers to include fired heater modifications simultaneously to other process modifications. This session will explain this opportunity with a refinery example.

This session will highlight the new capabilities and innovations in Aspen Plant Scheduler and examples of how customers can get more value using these capabilities. Some examples of such capabilities include Active User Assistance and configurations, Synchronized Activity Grid View, and enhancements to data handling and planning board functions in Aspen Plant Scheduler.
Supply Chain Management Main Session III: Sales & Operations Planning
This session will highlight new capabilities and innovations in Aspen Supply Chain Planner and examples of how customers can get more value using these capabilities. Some examples of such capabilities include the new exception reports and configuration of exception reports, global filters, and drill-down analysis.
Supply Chain Management Main Session IV: SAP Integration
This session will highlight capabilities in Aspen Supply Chain Connect (ASCC) to assist customers effectively and quickly deploy aspenONE Supply Chain Management applications. This session provides an overview of AspenTech’s highlights and product direction of their new Enterprise Performance Management offering which further leverages the rich existing platform to a multi-site, enterprise level view. Session Description: Traditionally planning & scheduling operates in different business silos. However, there is tremendous value in collaboration and bringing these functions closer together. New aspenONE Planning & Scheduling has made great advances in facilitating this collaboration. Some of the areas of improvement have been; identifying key touch points between planning and scheduling, and facilitating data sharing will tremendously reduce the gaps between plan, schedule and operations. This session will cover how users can exploit these synergies to increase their operating margins and reduce margin leakage.
Petroleum Supply Chain Main Session IV: Assay Management
Session Description: The Next Generation Assay Management is here. This session will cover the latest innovation with the launch of Aspen’s PIMS assay management. Assay characterization, assay addition, and assay re-cutting are now an integral part of aspen’s planning tool PIMS, this leads to significantly increased productivity of the planners and schedulers. PIMS assay management also includes a ground breaking molecular modeling technique, which enables more accurate property predictions. Additionally the whole area of consistency, e.g. between constraints in Scheduling systems and constraints in APC will be discussed; as well as the real-time feedback which is possible from APC applications which is relevant to Planning & Scheduling.

Advanced Process Control Main Session I: Plenary & Future Direction
Session Description: AspenTech APC products are the de facto standard for model predictive control in the process industries. This session provides an overview of aspenONE APC’s recent innovation highlights and product direction. The session will include short customer presentations selected from across all customer submissions for APC.
Advanced Process Control Main Session II: Adaptive Process Control and a New Methodology for Implementation & Sustained Value
Session Description: This session is devoted to a discussion on leveraging recent innovations like Adaptive Process Control to modify to the APC implementation and maintenance methodologies. The discussion centers on how recent innovations can be used to streamline new implementations and reconfigure sustainability as a continuous process.
Advanced Process Control Main Session III: APC Deployment Management - Recommended Infrastructure and the Use of Virtual Machines
Session Description: The use of virtual machines is representative of the innovations that are shaping the IT environment for plant automation. In this session, AspenTech, in conjunction with an early adopter customer, will discuss new recommendations for configuring APC deployment servers. This session will also showcase the use of virtual machines and illustrate the positive impact on installation, license management, software updates and patching. This can be expanded to include systems integration topics and best practices, if needed.
Advanced Process Control Main Session IV: Synergies between Advanced Process Control & Process Simulation
This session will demonstrate how the use of HYSYS models can prevent problems during the commissioning phase of an APC project. In this session we will demonstrate the use of HYSYS for generating a seed model suitable for use in conjunction with Calibrate Mode. Included will be a demonstration of how a HYSYS steady state model can be used to fix gains in a model ID problem, resulting in a very short step test. HYSYS can be used to figure out empirical dynamics, while using rigorous steady state gains. We will also demonstrate that we can infer from the HYSYS model what mass balance to close, what to force collinear.
Advanced Process Control Main Session V: Test Drives & Feedback
This working session will provide an opportunity for our attendees to get some ‘quality time’ time with the newest release of the APC products. Multiple stations would be configured to highlight different aspects of the latest innovations in APC: (a) Adaptive Process Control, (b) Model Identification, (c) Data Slicing. Much as we did in the TIF forums, we will highlight on-going development of the APC Model Builder.
Advanced Process Control Main Session VI: APC and Planning & Scheduling Synergies (Combined Session with Petroleum Supply Chain)
This session will explore a number of synergies which exist between Planning & Scheduling technology and APC. This session will focus on recent enhancements in our aspenONE Supply & Distribution technology. There will be a particular focus on the integration of Planning & Scheduling. In addition we will highlight some customer examples of Supply Chain Management best practices.
Supply & Distribution Main Session I: Integrated Supply Chain Planning, Scheduling, & Actualization
Session Description: This subtrack will cover the use of aspenONE Supply and Distribution tools in an integrated manner. Distribution planning, physical movement scheduling, and actualization processes will be demonstrated and discussed enabling better collaboration between the distribution planners and distribution schedulers. Schedule directly versus plan. Track planned vs. scheduled vs. actual for improved business process.
Supply & Distribution Main Session II: Trading Decision Support
Session Description: This subtrack will describe how optimization technology can be applied to enhance decision support tools for Traders.
MSC Best Practice & Training Sessions:
Scheduling: This session will explain the latest capabilities in refining scheduling in APS and MBO, including rundown blending. There will be a discussion on best practices including some customer testimonials. This will be a chance for AspenTech’s Scheduling community to share experiences and vision for the future.
Planning: This session will cover planning best practices and customer success stories. You will hear from customers on how they have taken the world’s best planning solution to the next level.
Petroleum Supply Chain: This will be a focused session on Supply Chain Management issues including Inventory Management, Operational Scheduling & Distribution Planning Optimization. Consistency issues between Supply Chain Modeling and Refinery Modeling will be explored
Data Management: This session will discuss core Aspen IP.21 functionality including 64 bit capabilities, redundancy solutions and connectivity. Data replication solutions will also be discussed.
Batch Analysis: This session will discuss different methods for analyzing Batch performance including Golden Batch profiling, genealogy and Batch Multivariate analysis
Advanced Process Control Calibrate Mode: This session will be a deep dive on Calibrate mode. There will be an opportunity for interested customers to question early adopters on their experiences. There will be detailed discussions on the robustness of controllers used in Calibrate mode.
Advanced Process Control Nonlinear Control: This session will be an opportunity for the nonlinear control community to discuss user experiences and provide their feedback. A number of customer success stories will be highlighted.
